Cipro Linked to Tendon Ruptures and Tendinitis

Cipro, the powerful prescription antibiotic brand made by Bayer, has been linked to painful tendon ruptures, tendinitis, and other severe injuries. Many of the devastating injuries have required extensive surgeries and periods of rehabilitation to repair. In some cases the injuries have left victims permanently disabled and unable to walk or stand without assistance. The reports of injuries prompted the Food and Drug Administration to issue tough new warnings in June 2008 about Cipro and other brands belonging to the fluoroquinolone family of antibiotics.

Brief Use Puts Cipro Patients At Risk

Patients taking Cipro even for brief periods of time to battle infections have reported suffering sudden and unexpected ruptures of tendons in their feet, hands and arms. The Achilles Tendon in the foot and the rotator cuff of the shoulder have commonly been affected. The reason why the drug leads to an increased risk of tendon injuries is not known.

In addition to tendon ruptures and tendinitis, Cipro users may also experience:

Black Box Warnings Ordered

In June 2008, after receiving and investigating wide-spread reports of tendon ruptures and tendinitis in patients taking Cipro, the Food and Drug Administration ordered Bayer to include a prominent “Black Box” warning on the product’s packaging to alert users and physicians of the increased risk of injuries. Black Box warnings are the most severe notice the FDA can order manufacturers to place on a product’s packaging.
